SYDNEY CITY WASTE WORKERS TRASHED UNDER NEW CONTRACT TENDER: TAKE $200 PAY CUT OR GO
Sydney City
waste workers lose $200 per week in pay and all entitlements under a new
contract tender for waste management services.
“Around 40 waste workers have been trashed by the new contractor, URM – they lose not only over $200 per week in wages, but also all their entitlements - because URM refuse to maintain the work conditions they had under old contractor, Veolia,” said TWU NSW State Secretary Wayne Forno.
“They have to reapply for their jobs if they want to keep them – and if they get them they’ll be paid $200 less and lose all accrued entitlements – their long service leave, sick pay and holiday pay.”
“These are hard working people with families to support, some of whom have been doing this job for ten years – $200 is a lot of money for them.”
The City of Sydney changes contractors for waste services today, with previous contractor Veolia handing over to new contractor URM, to whom the City of Sydney awarded the tender for waste management.
“To stop more workers being thrown out on the scrapheap if they refuse to accept ridiculously lowered pay conditions and losing the jobs they have done effectively for years, Councils need to have a firm policy or community impact clause so contractors who submit tenders must agree to maintain wages, conditions and continuity of entitlements,” said Wayne Forno.
“The Council of the City of Sydney passed a motion last week to encourage new contractor URM to agree to talks with the Transport Workers Union, however this has not yet eventuated and Veolia’s contract expires today with many workers to be unemployed and out on the scrapheap tomorrow.”
