safe rates

safe ratesThe NSW Branch of the Transport Workers Union has thrown its weight behind the national Safe Rates campaign taking the message across the state.

So far, TWU NSW secretary, Wayne Forno and assistant secretary, Bruce Penton, have been hitting the streets of Sydney appearing in newspapers in St Marys, Mt Druitt, Penrith, Bankstown, Parramatta and Holroyd.

“We are asking for Councillors, Mayors, MPs and anyone we can, to support our members in the road transport industry and we are taking the message to the people,” Wayne Forno said.

“The nation’s economy would stop without road transport – it is essential. But people should not have to die to keep it going.”

Major regional media markets have also been targeted, with Wollongong, Maitland, Port Macquarie and Wyong all targeted, while a road trip from Brisbane to Canberra took in Lismore, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Armidale, Tamworth, Dubbo, Griffith, Leeton, Narrandera and Wagga.

“We are taking the message to the regions as the regional centres would not survive without trucks to take the goods to major markets – and bring essentials back to the community,” Mr Forno said.

“It is encouraging that have received strong support from the community and their elected representatives, but we will continue this fight and hopefully hit most major towns with our message throughout the rest of the year.”
