Update on Inquiries into TWU Training,
Education & Industrial Rights Fund
The Transport Workers Union of NSW has received correspondence from
the NSW Industrial Registrar in relation to its inquiries into the Training,
Education and Industrial Rights Fund.
In correspondence the NSW Industrial Registrar has said:
“On the basis of the information contained therein I am satisfied that the
Transport Workers’ Union (NSW Branch) is taking appropriate action in
response to the recommendations contained within the Deloitte Report.”
Since 2003, 3,101 delegates and members have been trained by this fund
to improve their industrial rights, health and safety when working in
Australia’s most dangerous industry.
That’s 16,780 hours of valuable face-to-face safety training delivered to
TWU members where and when they need it.
The Deloitte Review was commissioned by the TWU and the
recommendations were fully endorsed by the rank and file Committee of
Management. The review found that the conduct of the Fund was not
improper but there was a need for its administration to be improved.
Following the independent Deloitte review into the Fund, the TWU of NSW
committed to implement all of the improvements identified to improve the
structure.
The TWU is currently working with legal representatives to establish a
company limited by guarantee to assume the functions of the fund. This
new structure will include employer representation on its board and union
representatives will be nominated from the TWU’s rank and file
Committee of Management.
