McArthur Express employees ask:Joe Hockey what are you waiting for?
Following revelations that security holders will be given priority over the 500 McArthur Express families Transport Workers’ Union members and their families are calling on Joe Hockey, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations to step in.
Transport Workers’ Union Senior Official Mark Crosdale said “it has become clear that once again the hard working employees and subcontractors of a failed company have been abandoned by the Federal Government.
“It is up to Joe Hockey to stand up for these Australian families and small businesses and guarantee that both employees, sub-contractors and small businesses will be paid.
“We ask that Joe Hockey allow the General Employees Entitlements and Redundancy Scheme (GEERS) be available to the families of both employees and subcontractors to ensure that their full entitlements are paid.
“This is absolutely critical in ensuring that these small businesses can continue to operate.
Steve Gauci, a sub-contractor of Bon McArthur, who purchased his vehicle off the company for $77,000 only last month said, “I am owed $15,000 in wages, and as of last month I now have a $90,000 debt. What is Joe Hockey waiting for? I need to pay my bills now.”
McArthur Express administrators will hold a meeting with employees at the Ashlar Golf Club in Springfield Ave, Blacktown, at 4pm today. The first meeting of creditors will take place on Tuesday 2nd October.
Senior Official Mark Crosdale is available for comment.
