TWU State
Secretary
Wayne Forno |
Dear [FIRSTNAME],
Aren’t we all glad that is over? The conclusion to the federal election, while bizarre, is the right result for our members for these simple reasons:
✓ Superannuation will be raised from nine per cent to 12 per cent
✓ Entitlements packages for redundancies will be improved and
✓ the Fair Work Australia system will be retained.
If things had gone the other way, the government would have had the power to make 198 changes to the Fair Work Act by regulation — bypassing parliament. Ideological sentiment is polarised at the moment, but the facts speak for themselves. We all hope that a period of solid governance — the implementation of good policies — will reduce the polarisation and bring us the prosperity we are entitled to as hard-working citizens.
The Gillard Government has already committed to advancing a Safe Rates system, and the Prime Minister’s Safe Rates Advisory Group will deliver its option paper to the government soon.
I’d also like to note that independent MP for New England Tony Windsor has thrown his support behind the Safe Rates campaign.
With forward-thinking independents such as Mr Windsor, maybe minority government won’t be so bad after all!
All the best,
Wayne

Fair Work Australia hands down landmark ruling in Boral case
Last week Boral Head Delegate Greg ‘Grumpy’ Masters and TWU Legal Officer Oshie Fagir were at Fair Work Australia to hear Commissioner Harrison hand down two rulings in our favour.
“The decision went down very, very well with the drivers — but I don’t think it went down well with the company!” Grumpy said. “I spoke to management to arrange a meeting, and they said they hadn’t even read the decision yet. It was great to see everyone stand together on this.”
Grumpy thanked the members, the Member Committee, Organiser Grahame Hastings, Negotiator Glenn Nightingale, and Oshie for making the victory possible. Read more. |

National Office bulletin: Floods could disrupt supply chain
With road closures and major pressure on the national supply chain as a result of the Victorian floods, there are calls for delivery schedules to become more flexible to reduce pressure on drivers who may be delayed through road closures.
Transport Workers’ Union National Secretary Tony Sheldon said the union would be monitoring developments in the state, and would be calling a meeting of all major transport parties, including clients, if the situation worsened and main supply routes were threatened.
“There are people who have lost crops and their belongings, and that is a terrible for families and small businesspeople across the state,” Tony said. “We want to ensure that the support needed now and in the recovery is there and available, and flexible enough to see the thousands of people in these areas have access to whatever they need.” Read more.
