Major Announcement regarding Owner Drivers
Federal Workplace Relations Minister Kevin Andrews has announced the Independent Contractors Act will maintain protections for NSW owner drivers. This is the result of transport workers and their families fighting to protect 30 years of NSW state industrial law. (read the announcement)
As a result owner drivers will maintain:
- The protection of safe and fair rates
- The ability to have unfairly terminated contracts reinstated
- Access to the independent Industrial Relations Commission for fair dispute resolution procedures
- Protection of the right to collectively negotiate
- Protection of contract determinations.
In a press conference TWU Secretary Tony Sheldon said: “Pending discussions with our owner-driver committee, as a result of today’s decision, this peaceful family protest will now be put on-hold until the TWU has seen a full copy of the legislation.
“This is a very significant decision by the Minister today and represents the protection of 30 years of bi-partisan support for NSW state laws.
“Kim Beazley and his team were the first people to raise this issue in Federal Parliament.
“Community and religious leaders have also expressed their support for our campaign."
“It has been the thousands of owner drivers and their families that have achieved this result today.”
