TWU Members Take On Retail Bosses and Win
Following on from the StaySafe hearings at NSW State Parliament House, Transport workers marched the streets of Sydney to meet the boss of Woolworths, Roger Corbett at the Sydney Town Hall Metro Store in a bid to demand answers about the number of drivers who are forced to wait unreasonable amounts of time at loading stations in Woolworths stores. Members blockaded the road in a bid to let the public know about the urgency of the situation. "All drivers want is a safe working environment so," said Tony Sheldon.
“Woolworths, as one of the major retailers is setting the standard delivery times and contract rates of pay for the rest of the industry. If they set unrealistic delivery times and have drivers waiting for hours at loading docks, without proper breaks for unsustainable periods, the smaller chains follow suit,” NSW TWU Secretary Tony Sheldon said.
“Transport workers and their families deserve to know that an enforceable Chain of Responsibility Code will be implemented in NSW. The Code will ensure that all the components in the transport chain, from the retailer to the consigner will be accountable for safe driving times” Tony Sheldon said.
“Truck drivers want Safe and Sustainable Systems of Remuneration in all Transport Contracts issued by Woolworths” Mr Sheldon said.
Truck drivers presented Mr Corbett with a letter asking that the waiting times, loading and unloading restrictions and the subcontracting of work out to other companies be reviewed and monitored with the safety of drivers and road users being paramount.
